Ship Life: Career Onboard
Even though working on ships is contract work, some people seek to have a full career onboard. This, though, is where the balance of ship life and real life can get tricky.

Ship Life: Musician
When I first decided I wanted to try cruise life, I wanted to be a musician. More specifically, I wanted to be a drummer. But I can't read music and I didn't know any other musicians at the time. To this day, this is a part of me who wishes I could have had the musician experience on ships. So in order for me to know more about the cruise ship musician lifestyle, I have interviewed Jordan Martin. An incredibly talented bass and guitar player who has extensive experience as a cruise ship musician. Also, please check out Jordan's channel. He is a great person and he is a super awesome guy. His channel is more than cruise ship information. He talks about life, chasing your dreams, and doing what it takes to be happy. Absolutely check him out. If you have any questions for Jordan, don't hesitate to reach out to him: www.ShipLife.Club www.jordanfmartin.com www.startinglinestudios.com https://www.youtube.com/jordanfmartin

Ship Life: Cross-Training
There are so many jobs available on a cruise ship, it can be difficult to decide what best fits your skills and lifestyle. Not to mention different jobs offer different amounts of pay, different privileges, and different living-quarters. Sometimes, a crew member begins working in one job and, after being onboard a while, decides they would rather have a different job. This is where cross-training comes in...

Ship Life: Work Week
There are cruises of all different lengths, so when it comes to your work schedule, it can get crazy. However, a common cruise length is a week. Even though there may seem to only be so many things to do on a cruise ship, there is never a dull moment. And it is up to the crew to make every day different, enjoyable, entertaining, fun, and memorable.

Ship Life: Grooming Policies
Grooming is important in any job, but on cruise ships it's kicked up a notch. Of course we all must be clean, but each cruise line has a certain "look" they are going for. They each have a particular demographic they are trying to attract and they all expect their crew members to fit the mold they are creating. It's not too hard to abide by the rules, and, truthfully, once you are on board, you will realize that certain policies aren't quite what they seem.

Ship Life: Wi-Fi
For the most part, internet on cruise ships is absolutely terrible. However, this is comparing internet access to our "normal" life expectation. Living onboard a cruise ship is completely different than living on land, so I suggest changing your perspective about Wi-Fi. Not using the internet everyday isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Ship Life: Packing
One of the hardest skills to master while living the cruise life is packing your suitcase. There is an art to packing just enough clothing to live normally for months away from home but also few enough to fit in the very limited space in your cabin. No matter how you pack, however, you will inevitably bring too much. Then the challenge becomes bringing all the new items you have collected during your contract back home.

Ship Life: Crew Bar
A major place onboard where crew members hang out is the Crew Bar. With super cheap drinks, DJs, live music, and TVs, the Crew Bar is a great place to unwind after work, or party the night away before a port day. Whether you drink or not, CB is probably the easiest place to meet up with friends and make new ones. Just be careful how much you drink. There is a limit. After all, we are never really "off" duty.

Ship Life: Dating
When working onboard a cruise ship, you will most likely get very close to many people. However, when it comes to relationships, there are completely different challenges than on land. Crew members may date other crew members, but fraternizing with passengers is prohibited. If your significant other or family are onboard your ship, as long as you get special permission from the higher-ups, you may be allowed to go into their passenger cabins, or even bring them into crew areas. Just make sure you know your allowances before doing something that could get you fired.

Ship Life: Perks
There are many benefits for crew members while working on a cruise ship. Some perks are more obvious, like traveling the world, while other benefits are only appreciated once onboard. Those of us in the special club know as "the crew" have a much different experience on the ship compared to passengers.

Ship Life: Safety Duties
Once you join the ship, you'll realized you weren't just hired for the position printed on your name-tag. Safety is the most important aspect of cruising, so crew members must master their safety duties, ready for anything that can happen out on the open sea.

Ship Life: Food
Many vacationers think the cruise ship food is even more important than the ports of call. Cruise ships have a huge selection of food, plentiful options, and delicious items served almost everywhere onboard. However, living on a cruise ship sometimes leads you to view the ship cuisine a little differently.

Ship Life: Free Time
Living onboard can sometimes seem to drag out and cruising to the same place every week can get monotonous, but if you take advantage of everything the cruise line and your ship has to offer, your contract will definitely be enjoyable.

Ship Life: Broadcast Technician
Before I joined NCL as a Broadcast Technician, I spent a lot of time researching what it would be like working aboard a cruise ship. Unfortunately, there wasn't much information about the Broadcast Technician position specifically. I hope this helps with any questions you may have as you seek to figure out whether working on a cruise ship is for you.
